LISON DE CAUNES

Maître d’art since 1998

Once upon a time
straw marquetery

For more than 20 years, thanks to Lison de Caunes, straw marquetry has been rediscovered and used by many decorators and interior designers. Even if it is still a hardly known art technique, straw marquetry is a French tradition. Since the 17th century, there has been a large production of cases, caskets, pieces of furniture made with straw marquetry.

Lison de Caunes devoted a part of her time to the restoration of this patrimony, and therefore she acquired the mastery of a workmanship that she also expresses through contemporary creation pieces.

Lison de Caunes studied at Union centrale des Arts décoratifs in Paris. She then decided to perpetuate her grandfather Andre Groult’s tradition. She started working with straw marquetry in the 1970s and quickly became a specialist. She spent years restoring antiques and Art Deco furniture. Today, she dedicates her craft to creating made to order furniture, wall panels or objects for interior designers and decorators. In 2015 she launched Lison de Caunes Création, her own design line. Over the years she has curated several exhibitions. She also published books on straw marquetry.

The Material

The straw used is rye straw (the same kind used for chair reseating). It is cultivated and harvested old style in Burgundy (France). The straw is dried and dyed then opened and flattened in the workshop. It has a natural silica polish that makes it impermeable and resistant. The maintenance only requires wax.

STRAW MARQUETRY : FROM GOLD OF THE POOR TO MODERN LUXURY

Straw marquetry is a French tradition going back to the 17th century. It was long forgotten until Lison de Caunes contributed to its return through ancient objects restoration and modern design creations. In the past decade, French and foreign designers have shown great interest in this wonderful material. Lison de Caunes collaborates with them and create mural panels, furniture and one of a kind objects for private clients or luxury brands.

The History

The technique is close to wood marquetry. In the 17th century Marquetry inlayers, clergymen, sailors and convicts used it, and it gave birth to a very rich handicraft especially in France. Straw marquetry came back into fashion during the Art Deco period, when the most prestigious decorators returned this art to its former glory.
